Cannot enable this feature

Greetings

I'm currently puzzling over ocP's Saved Searches feature, and how to get it up and running. On my v9.0.9 , I can access a Saved Searches page (that lists no searches, naturally) via the Site map, and correspondingly, in the Site Tree Editor, the site:Search module includes an entry point for the page. In the Permissions Tree Editor, however, the Search module doesn't list it. Within the translate_website_content there's an entry with text that would obviously accompany a button or checkbox option to save a just-performed search query, but neither this text nor any button/box is ever displayed on any search results page, to my knowledge.

There's no mention of the feature in the Tutorial on search, nor on the deployment forum, nor in the issue tracker, so I've reached the proverbial brick wall!

Please can anybody help me out on this?

Thanks for reading!

It's commented out of the SEARCH_ADVANCED.tpl  template.

The feature is being dropped in v10 because it's being considered bloat.

I would recommend people just bookmark search screens in their browsers.

As for it showing up on the sitemap page/block – better sitemap configurability is coming in v10, which will generally make it easier to set up more fine-tuned auto-generated sitemaps. In v9 you either have to fully accept the default generated sitemap, or customise it with your own Comcode/HTML (which is the official approach, as I don't think in many cases the auto-generated stuff is going to be anywhere close to where you'd want it customised to).

I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.

Hi Chris, and thanks!

Somehow I missed this block when I initially skimmed through the "Search"-related templates! Please could you advise me how the line, {+START,SET,commented_out} should read in order to enable what follows it? (I'm presuming no other changes to the rest of the code-block would be required, of course - would I be right?)

Purely personally, I'm sad this feature is due to be axed - people subscribing to my site will basically be doing research of some kind, and in my experience researchers tend to really value having tools of this sort at their fingertips! On the other hand, I entirely take your point that bookmarking search-results pages accomplishes exactly the same thing, and I'm really grateful for your reminder. And the bloat factor is something we'd all wish to keep in check - so if none bar a tiny fraction of ocP users has any call for the feature, well, go it must.

All the same, I'm wondering whether. in the event of upgrading to v10, it wouldn't be overly difficult to hook in the feature's existing relevant code files as a customization - or would you foresee that to be a somewhat complicated undertaking?

Many thanks, too, for the news-in-advance about v10 and Site map configurability - I'm looking forward to exploring that one when the time comes.

Best regards,

Richard

Remove {+START,SET,commented_out} and the matching {+END}. However I haven't personally tested this feature in a long time, and I'm not sure anyone ever used it – so I'm not fully confident it will work.

It was implement back when I was a lot more bullish about ocPortal being a system that could do everything ;). It soon became apparent that there was no end to features people may want, and new ways of doing things always coming out, so we needed to increase our anti-bloat push-back. I think also at the time we had not made things like search forms bookmarkable, as they used to be implemented as POST forms instead.

It could be an addon I suppose, but someone would need to volunteer the time, or fund it.

Many thanks!

Followed your steps and the block is now displaying nicely on Advanced Search pages: header, description text, textarea and link to Saved Searches page.

Just one titchy problem - as things are right now, after submitting a query (with a title for the saved search) nothing appears on the Saved Searches page (apart from the pro forma .nothing_here text: "There are no entries at this time"!:(

Have I overlooked something, perhaps? (Cannot be permissions, at any rate, since I'm testing as Administrator.)

Actually I hit on the customization idea with the thought of doing it for myself - but, re-reading my sentence, I realize I omitted to say that -my apologies, Chris. However, the alternative of funding it would certainly be something worth me considering should the task be beyond my level of know-how. Many thanks for suggesting that!

I uncommented it in the SEARCH_ADVANCED.tpl in the hotfix. Use this version of the template rather than your override, as I made improvements to it.

It will remain commented in future versions, so copy it back to an override again.

Hi Chris,

I've just replaced the original code with your hotfix's - brilliiant! Works a treat, looks great, and it's exactly what I'm wanting for my users. As for your suggestion of somebody turning the feature into an add-on, I'll definitely be choosing it for my own first attempt at making one. Thanks over and over.

Off now to view my available gift points...

Best wishes,

Richard
