I've been playing around with the settings for the OC Forum and have a question for Chris and the group here:

on one of my sites, the forum is used for discussions of varying topics.  one of the members has asked if there is a way for the listing of topics to be rearranged so that the newest posting is displayed first (or at the top, so to speak) and the oldest or original posting is listed last.

Currently, the forum displays topics chronologically in just the opposite format; with the original posting listed first... and the newest response listed last.

With all the capabilities that OC Forum offers, I have to believe that this is something that I can do - but I've yet to be able to figure it out?!?

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Mark

Can do on threaded view of v9.

  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Of course.... and this site is running 8.1.4 (soon to be 8.1.6).  Any chance it's available in that upgrade as well?

I can't remember to be honest. If we added it in v9, there is no chance it will be back-ported to v8. If we added it in v8, it'll be there ;).

Unfortunately I wasn't able to find the functionality that's being requested even using the threaded view in v9.0.5.  That's ok though, it's certainly not a show stopper.

Thanks for your help and continued support.

I don't see version 10 out there yet but hopefully it gets me what I describe in this 3 minute video.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFMPZ8ZYXQ8&feature=youtu.be
This 1:30 video has an almost exact theme except it deals with the news comments.http://youtu.be/dBownvehFoQ

Hi Tom,

I'll take a look at your video soon. However quickly noting that v10 is a long term release, it may not even be out this year – currently a tonne of stuff is in it, but it's not going to come out until some big strategic objectives are achieved in it.

Thanks for that.

Hadn't even 'seen' the issue as I was concentrating on the number of TOPICS being commented on - not the number of comments!

All achievable right now…

Change block's 'username_key' parameter to lastusername.

In the BLOCK_MAIN_FORUM_TOPICS_TOPIC template, change TOPIC_URL to TOPIC_URL_UNREAD.

@Fletch…

I think you've changed some language strings there. It usually talks about posts rather than comments (POST_PLU language string). The 'title' block parameter can easily be customised independently though.

Thanks Chris,

I had a little trouble finding the BLOCK_MAIN_FORUM_TOPICS_TOPIC template so I made the video below.  Hopefully this helps the next guy.

http://youtu.be/f_7MvkUbohc
All the above video is complementary to the two above that outlined my desire.  Turns out OCPortal already had the desired look.

Thanks to both of you.

@Tom
It certainly helped the 'other guy' by pointing my nose in the right direction. I had another template to edit (see below), but your observations in the vid got me on the right track.

@Chris
The lang strings hadn't been touched. I'm too timid to overlook overrides these days - a major problem during my earlier installs!

My problem was with BLOCK_SIDE_FORUM_NEWS_SUMMARY.tpl, probably because my display is not in a panel, but in a pseudo-block on the front page. Whatever, the issue has been sorted!

Ah actually Fletch you are using the side_forum_news block, he was using main_forum_topics -- those work slightly differently.

ROTFLMAO!

There's no denying ocP's versatility. Just because the block says 'MAIN' or 'SIDE' doesn't mean it cannot be used elsewhere. Tom is using a 'MAIN' in his side panel, and I am using a 'SIDE' on my main page.

If they haven't already discovered this, other users should take note!

Actually the substantial difference is 'topics' vs 'news'. The 'news' one you're on kind of pretends the topics are actually news, and hence uses news terminology and styling on them.

Chris,

I thought I'd give this a try on the MPAG site that's running 8.1.6 and when I look through the template list for the Government theme, I don't even see the template that you reference above listed??

It was probably renamed. Use the contextual screen tools to find what templates are used on a screen, it'll probably have a similar name.

Another functionality question.  Video is about 2:30 long.
Why do I have the ability to add attachments on one site but not the other?
OCPortal_Attachment - YouTube

Chris references a "contextual screen tools"  function in the post above.  this functionality can be used to identify which page is being used to build up the current screen.  I couldn't find that function.

Also, on one of my sites I am able to insert attachments.  On the other I am not.  I am trying to figure out how to make this work for both.

Contextual tools are in a drop-down in the footer of the default theme. I can't remember off-hand what it's called, as we've renamed it a few times. Maybe 'page tools' or 'screen actions' or something like that.

It's not that you can't insert an attachment. Attachments will still be on the main form. It's that the file/media library isn't available which is what let's you choose an existing attachment from a collection – which will be due to the filedump addon not being installed.
