Hopefully this one is pretty easy...

For another new site I'm doing, I have everything set up as usual (no issues, all is working well) using version 9.09 pretty much out of the box.

For some reason, outgoing email notifications are not working?  When I test, I get a strange screen which includes an error message as well as a confirmation that the email was successful (it's not, they're not being sent):

I'm thinking it's probably a simple setting somewhere, but I've poked around everywhere I know of and I can't seem to get this thing working!  As always, your help is greatly appreciated :)

Thanks, attachment is below of same image if it gets cropped off

Can I ask if you've activated CRON for the new site?

 :o

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

Hi Fletch, no ive not activated cron…I've never done it for any of my ocp sites.  I'm not even sure what it is or how I would activate it?

Do a search in the tutes for CRON, and it is a piece of cake to activate it via your provider's control panel.

You will also find a folder named 'cron' (/sources/hooks/systems/cron) that will give you a clue as to what sort of things are handled, and I've 'assumed', rightly or wrongly, that ocf_welcome_emails.php is probably the one.

I'm unclear how the email notification gets tied in with CRON, nor do I know much about it, but I notice during my daily Admin checks that I am notified how many emails were sent and how many of them were triggered by CRON.

Perhaps somebody more competent in this area can pick up on this one …

 :(

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

Thanks for helping Fletch, however actually it won't be related to CRON. That is used if the e-mail queue is on, but it isn't in this case.

Please try this change to sources/mail.php file:
Attachment
» Download: mail.php (33 Kb, 61 downloads so far)

It won't fix it, but it should provide a system error message instead of ocPortal's generic one.

If the "Pass website e-mail address to 'sendmail'" option is on, try disabling that. Some servers block that, although ocPortal is meant to be able to automatically adjust for this.

Is this the same server you've used before?
Is it Windows or Linux? Windows can be more finicky as the server's PHP install must be properly set up for e-mail to work (Linux has conventions that work out-of-the-box).

Thanks both Fletch and Chris!

I have to say, I agree with Chris regarding running CRON, after I looked into it I'm pretty sure that's not related to the problem I'm experiencing.

Chris...the "Pass website e-mail address to 'sendmail'" option is not turned on (I've never used that on any of my sites).

I did swap out the mail.php file with the one you sent, but when I tested it on the site, it generated the exact same message as I'd attached previously, the same red triangle and "A system email could not be sent..." along with the large green check mark stating "An email has been sent..."  For some reason, I am not seeing the system error message you said would be provided??

For your last question:  YES!  This is the same Arvixe box that we had all those issues with CloudFlare on.  The site is running on a Linux box.

For what it's worth...I'm using my other email address at MSN.com for testing, which I've had for ages and has never had send/receive problems.

When I create the new account on the site and I look at the member list, it's showing the newest member as:

Where I am actually "emailer" and that account was set up with the msn email address I referenced above -- it should not have had any issue confirming that address.

Hi,

That's odd, I'd expect it to at least pull up an error. I'd better debug through this for you then, especially as it's on our recommended host.

If you'd like to go ahead, please open a bug report ticket with access details:
https://ocportal.com/site/tickets/ticket.htm?ticket_template=bug&cost=free

I've seen issues like this before, but they're pretty rare nowadays. Usually it comes down to something the particular email server doesn't like, or some kind of PHP restriction.

Hi Chris...

I was expecting the .php file you sent me to display a whole bunch of information too, but just got the same screen I did originally, unfortunately.

Per your request, I've created an admin account for you and included the information in the ticket I opened.  If there is any other information or access I can provide, don't hesitate to ask.

Once again, THANK YOU for you gracious support of ocPortal

After testing this afternoon with Chris, I've submitted a ticket to the hosting company in hopes that they can identify the problem.  If at all possible, I will post the resolution here.

Okay so Arvixe has a glitch right now that happens intermittently.

While they are working on it, anyone affected should use ocPortal's SMTP settings (Admin Zone > Setup > Config > Site Options > SMTP).
You need to fill in the username as "user@domain".
You will need this hotfix to fix compatibility issues in ocPortal's SMTP authentication support: 0001425: SMTP problems - ocPortal feature tracker
