Here's a strange one!  One of my sites (version 8.1.6) had someone sign up and somehow he was able to create two accounts using the exact same user name - I've xxx'd out his name and email in the stack trace on purpose:

When I go into either profile and choose to edit and then delete the account, I get booted out of OCP and when I log back in, get this info:

An error has occurred

The username specified already exists (version: 8.1.6, PHP version: 5.2.8, URL: /main/site/index.php?page=members&type=view&id=e_town&keep_fatalistic=1)

You have turned on stack traces for all errors, via having keep_fatalistic=1 in the URL. This means that this may not actually be a fatal error, you have just asked for it to be presented as such (perhaps to help you find where it came from).

Here is the stack trace:

Below is a stack trace revealing the state the software was in when the error occurred. If this represents a bug in the unmodified software, you may want to check ocPortal website for a fix, and if there isn't one, report this as a bug. Please note that merely posting a stack trace is not sufficient for us to solve your problem; the stack trace is just an aid that presents us with additional information. We still need to know the error message, what you tried to do, how you tried to do it, version numbers, and any other appropriate information.
We apologise for this problem and if it's a bug we hope you will work with us so that we can fix it for you promptly.

Any ideas on how I can kill both of his accounts?

Cheers!

  • validate both accounts
  • change the username of one of them
  • delete both accounts

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

Weird problem. I guess maybe the join request submitted through to the server twice in quick succession. You could edit in the database. Otherwise make sure you pick to edit the one created first, that one shouldn't throw the error.

As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.

Thanks Fletch and Chris,

I wish I'd read Chris' response sooner because I changed the name of one of the entries and then deleted it, and was moving on to the second one...but when I click on the duplicate entry in the member list now, I get this:

There is also another stack trace, but when I click to display it, I get logged out and booted O_o

Update:

I wanted to avoid messing with DB entries if I could, so I created another new user and used the "merge user" function.

It worked!  The old user account was removed and combined with the new user.  At that point I was able to delete the account of the new user (which had, by the way, inherited the data from the original user) and now the member list is as it should be.

Thought I would pass this tip along in case anyone else runs into this down the road.
