Suddenly, a piece of recurring code I've been using for years, refuses to work any more, and I am at a loss trying to get to the bottom of the problem. Older posts continue to function as normal, but a new post I've been trying to include won't play nice. The snippet of code is:

Code

[semihtml]
<........ other text .......>
[center][img]{$BASE_URL}/images/eom_sm.png[/img][/center]<br />
<br />[/semihtml]
This is what I end up with …

… and trying to track the broken image gives me the following …
Critical error - bailing out

This is an error that has been elevated to critical error status because it occurred during the primary error mechanism reporting system itself (possibly due to it occuring within the standard output framework). It may be masking a secondary error that occurred before this, but was never output - if so, it is likely strongly related to this one, thus fixing this will fix the other.
The requested resource does not exist. (version: 9.0.6, PHP version: 5.2.17, URL: /anglo/site/pg/news/view/memory-lane/%7B%24BASE_URL%7D/image
s/eom_sm.png/index.php?keep_fatalistic=1)

One probably significant factor is that I posted this news item using the SU feature so that it appears that it was posted by the person who asked me to include the item.

The post can be viewed at Antiques.

Any offers of help?

Additional Info: Everything appears as it should in 'Preview' mode …!!

bummer

I am about to mark the original post as 'Resolved' because I removed the 'SU' version and re-posted using my Admin privileges, and everything displays as it should.

Is this software so discriminating that it is able to restrict what is displayed when HTML and JS is inserted by a non-admin (or even Admin masquerading as a member using the SU feature) - yet allows the identical code to be posted by Admin?

Yes, there are privileges that reflect additional security here. It's not obvious to non-programmers, but actually HTML and Javascript techniques can be used to completely hack a site; so, this lock-down is an important feature.

  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.
