I had an idea of an addon for discussion. Let me know your thoughts whether you like this idea or not?

When I am in forum home on the far right side it shows the latest post and user but you may have read it and have other unread topics under that category so the left side still shows the "New Posts" icon.

I was thinking that perhaps one of 3 things would make a nice addon:

Either change the user on the right to reflect the latest "unread post" to match the new posts icon on the left

or

Change the "New Posts" icon on the left once you've read the latest post that is shown on the right?

or

Keep the "New Post" icon on the left and the latest poster on the right but if you've read that have it indicated somehow there (marked read or different color or strike through or something)

Thoughts anyone or am I the only one that this niggles at?

Didn't mean to 'ignore' the post, Duck. Too wrapped up with the March theme!

However, I am having a 'senior' moment trying to understand your suggestion.

Here's how I attack the forums on a daily basis:

Perhaps I haven't quite understood your recommendation?

Same here, been a little too busy this week.

My attack method is to click the "Topics with unread posts" link in the members bar. From there it's just opening each new post in a new tab and start reading/scanning.

Sorry Duck, but I also had my senior moment trying to wrap my mind around your post, but looking at Fletch's image, it became all clear:cool:.

I Like this alternative, and maybe also matching the right part with it!

Are you thinking of changing just the left Icon, or the post Title as well?

This is not really critical for my daily visits, but would be a nice touch if you are willing to share your work on it.:)

Cheers!

@Jean That would be option 1 then

The new posts icon would still signify there are unread posts but the topic on the right (and poster name) would change to match the newest of those unread topics.

Option 2 is change the new posts icone to the no new posts icon.

option 3 is still show new posts icon and the latest post and poster as is now but just signify somehow that you have actually read that one (strike thru etc) and under the forum there are others you haven't read.

I don't think Sholzy and Fletch get what I am getting at but I think you do. When I get home Monday I will try and provide pic examples to better explain to sholzy and fletch and also demonstrate that their suggestions don't work as alternative solution for me (unless I am also misunderstanding them)

Maybe because my forums are set up a little differently (using a lot of sub-forums), I didn't grasp the idea of what you're wanting to do? (That, and it didn't seem to me to be any different from what is already in place.) Because of my setup, each forum would need 2 extra clicks to drill down to where what (I think) you were describing would be of any benefit. I would say about 99% of my users use the method I described in my earlier post making anything else unnecessary.

In anticipation of your explanation Duck, and as an explanation as to how I use the visual indicators pointing to unread posts:
  • visit forums and look for 'new posts' icons on the left
  • work my way through from top to bottom of general groupings
  • click on 'first unread' arrow to be taken to the start of the unread posts (the preceding 'read' posts are automatically moved outside the view-port)
  • read what I want to
  • click on the breadcrumb (top or bottom) to be taken back to the sub-forum ('Deploying', 'Themeing', 'whatever')
  • continue browsing for the rest of the unread posts (must use sholzy's approach some time)

In my defence, I don't use the threaded view, and would not consider 'cherry-picking' when reading posts/comments. I would be totally confused if I skipped between responses, so the only way I know to traverse the forums is to read ALL the posts in a thread or topic - but always in LINEAR mode!

Hope that helps to clarify my mindset …!!
