#43338 (In Topic #9620)

As a part of a series of addons/tips to improve desktop integration with ocPortal powered websites, I'm releasing the 'RSS dashboard' addon.

This addon is simply a set of new RSS hooks for ocPortal that allow you to monitor activity on your website.

Get RSS updates on:
  • New personal topics (notification of any posts in personal topics, or inline personal posts, that you have not yet read)
  • Admin/CMS actions on your website (notification of when somebody does something on your website)
  • When there are new unread topics (notification/quick-access to new posts)
These of course are in addition to all the existing RSS hooks that ocPortal contains for monitoring for new website content.

Once the addon is installed, to find the feed URLs access /backend.php on your site. This lists all the available feeds.

For this to work you need to set up the feed URLs in an RSS reader with 'HTTP authentication' enabled for them. The HTTP authentication details are your regular login details for your website. I'm not going to get into the business of recommending particular RSS readers, and there's a bit to learn to get used to the whole concept, but once you're into it it's a really handy way to keep on top of things.

Also, the next ocP4 patch release is going to include some template tweaks that add support for micro-formats:
  • hCalendar. When you visit a calendar event, supporting browsers will be able to auto-detect the calendar event and give an option to add it to your own personal calendar on your computer.
  • hCard. When you visit a member profile, supporting browsers will be able to auto-detect a contact card and give an option to add it to your own contacts book on your computer.
  • Webslices. The IOTD block will be advertised as a webslice, meaning users can add it to their IE8 browser toolbar and see when it changes. This is a Microsoft technology, but there's also a Firefox plugin for it ("Webchunks") and I expect it'll get adopted widely as it's an effective technology.

  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about Composr whenever you see the opportunity or support me on Patreon.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying Composr on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Wow nice this will come in handy. Specially the staff rss :).

Thanks Chris and good job.

I run and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Hi, Chris:

That is really great. I am particuarly fond of the IOTD RSS hook. Thanks!!!!

I always ask myself: WWWWD?, or, "What Would Wonder Woman Do?"
How come we have Yahoo IM, AIM, ICQ, you name it, but no field for Skype contact info?
