Hi guys,

I've just released this addon:
Download: Aviary (online picture editing) - ocPortal

Personally I would rather use something on my computer to edit images, but if you're not on your own computer, or you have a site where users aren't likely to install things, or you just want to make a quick change, this works really nicely :).

  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Thanks, Chris. This seemed like it was tailor-made for my users in particular. But, having problems importing this add-on. Using 5.1.0beta1, by the way, which may account for the problems.

Steps to reach my fumble:
  • Downloaded the add-on from this source
  • FTP'd the relevant changes to the relevant files and folders, also adding the template change to my user-defined theme
  • Checked the site to see if the magic was there to be used

Nada

Went to my Admin and tried to import. All seemed to go well, because the add-on was visible and offered itself up for download. However:
An error has occurred

Unfortunately a query has failed [DELETE FROM ocp5_image_url_sub_for WHERE expire<1295832781] [Table 'fletch_anglo.ocp5_image_url_sub_for' doesn't exist] (version: 5.1.0 beta1, PHP version: 5.2.15, URL: /anglo/adminzone/pg/admin_addons/_addon_import/index.php?upl
oading=1)

Any advice would be welcome …

Further to above:

Working with other images threw up a similar type of error so, looked closer and it was apparent that a table was missing (ocp5_image_url_sub_for). Created one with the right number of fields, but not sure I got the parameters for the fields right!?! However, other images (specifically IOTDs) were now working OK.

Here is the info:
An error has occurred

PHP NOTICE [8] Undefined offset: 1 in /home/fletch/public_html/anglo/sources_custom/uploads.php on line 28 (version: 5.1.0 beta1, PHP version: 5.2.15, URL: /anglo/adminzone/pg/admin_addons/_addon_import/index.php?uploading=1)

and

Looks like line 28 of the new sources_custom/uploads.php is being flagged, but I've seen the rest of the 'error' stuff appear in uploads.php and I am pretty much lost at deciphering what it means.

Help needed!

Hi,

It would install the table upon first doing an edit, but that actually is pretty confusing and not good that everything breaks until you do that ;).

I've found a couple of other issues, so I've fixed all this and reuploaded.

You can now call up http://baseurl/data_custom/aviary_install.php to install (clear out the table you made yourself first).

Dohhhhh!

What am I missing?

  • Cleared the table I created
  • Imported the add-on via Admin
  • It says it was installed
  • Re-read your post
  • Downloaded the Aviary tar
  • FTP'd the relevant files
  • Ran aviary_install.php
  • Got a blank screen after running it, with the message 'Done' in the taskbar
  • Checked the DB and the new table had been created, so that looked like a success

So, now, where is it and how do I use it on an image?

When you add e.g. an IOTD there should be an Edit link appearing once the file has been chosen. Or if you go into edit something there should be an edit link beneath the URL.
Maybe the template cache needs emptying. The JAVASCRIPT_SWFUPLOAD.tpl has to be active as an override in whatever theme is being used on the add/edit screen.

Ah, that's a bug that I guess only happens if short URLs are on. Does this fix it? You're on the cutting edge here ;).

I haven't substituted the new JAVASCRIPT_SWFUPLOAD.tpl for the old - yet.

BUT, I manually edited the broken URL and managed to get access to the Aviary editor. Used a basic 'mask&blur' feature and saved the file. It happily overwrote the existing image with the edited image and it displays exactly as I expected it to! The thumbnail in the IOTD box was not touched.

The Aviary image editor is pretty darn powerful, and will need to be used often to get the most out of it. But it can do 'simple' things in a simple way for the less ambitious. I think if I compare it charitably to Photoshop or GIMP I am not doing any of them a disservice!

I think this can be deemed a success, and a VERY useful tool.

Will report back when I've added the new JAVASCRIPT_SWFUPLOAD.tpl

-----------------------------

Update:

Here to report that all is working fine.

Major success!
