an addon request

Greetings,

Most of the time when I browse other offerings out there I am always thinks "Ha! ocPortal does that 1000000 x's better" or "that doesn't compare to ocPortal…"

However there are sometimes things I see out there that leave me thinking "I wish I had that in ocPortal". One of those this is growl notifications. Basically what that is is it makes a themable notification bubble that would appear from a predetermined part of the screen. IMO, this would be better than the box that appears on the forum page regarding a new PT, or the popup box that appears in the middle of the screen, getting in your way, concerning a new site-wide IM. These would be small bubbles that would be at the bottom of your screen, and if your O/S supports growl notifications, you could push them to your O/S's notification control, instead of only in the site.

This would be useful as a means of dealing with…
1.) New PT notifications
2.) Whisper notification
3.) site-wide IM's
4.) chat room notifications

and possibly more.

Anyways, drupal has an add-on for it, and I thought it looked neat, and would like to see it as an ADDON for ocportal.

Like ocPortal? Want to thank Chris and gang somehow? Then help out in the chat room! It really needs your help! Just open it in a tab everytime you open your web browser, and when you hear a "ding", check it out!

One problem with Growl is firewalls, I think anyway. Google are actually pushing a new web standard for allowing notifications from an active web page that I think can connect through to Growl.

There are various things we'd like to do (pretty sure there's a tracker post about it), generally do a complete overhaul of how notifications are done across all of ocPortal. There are lots of other things people might want notifications to - email, SMS, Twitter, IM clients, having the browser window shake, … List goes on. It's one of the biggest areas of flux where tech has not settled on any one approach.

However right now what is possible is to hook in an RSS reader to ocPortal. ocP has a lot of RSS feeds covering things, including I think personal topics/whispers.

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Yeap, a warning when the coffee is ready, a nice sofa in the chatroom, and a warning for if the computer goes out ….Uhmm we have to work on that one, something sounds not well about it….

*nods* Oh I understand all that, which is why I thought it might be best as an add-on instead of a general ocPortal feature. It might not work for everyone for example, and everyone might not want such a feature.

Or am I misreading you here, in that even as an addon, it wouldn't work with ocPortal? If so, I must admit I am clueless on why it wouldn't. I can see the firewall thing affecting some end users, but not ocPortal itself for example, with others being able to use such a feautre. I imagine it must work somehow if it works in Drupal… but then again perhaps there is something different about how Drupal deals with such things versus ocPortal.

As far as the two go, I find Drupal to be an aggrivating tool to work with. I just happen to like that one add on.

There are lots of other things people might want notifications to - email, SMS, Twitter, IM clients, having the browser window shake, … List goes on.

Now now, that is going beyond the scope of ocPortal lol. I definetly wouldn't want my windows shaking, and why should ocPortal tell me that I've got email, or an IM on kopete? Sillyness I tell ya! :P

Anyways, I simply think that having growl, or some sort of push notification toolkit, as an add-on would be great for ocPortal, to handle ocPortal notifications only. Having an out of the way and pleasant method of notifications would work good for me. The one reason I disabled site wide IM on my site is because I and my members hated the pop-up notification window, for example, plus this could work to tie in with other aspects (waiting message in the chat room for example, or a PT).

Allowing it to be pushed to or picked up by your O/S's notification daemon would be another great option for this type of add on.

Yeah agreed, just throwing my 2c in.

Regarding "email, SMS, …", I meant ocPortal might send notifications via these channels. So I'm saying ideally in the future ocP would have a built in capacity to select any of these as options.

If you're itching to have this functionality then a quick hack to make it would be via a script on the server and a script on the "target" machine. The server script would either be a) data_custom/something.php and output all of the required data whenever it is called via HTTP or b) a CRON script which dumps said data to data_custom/something.txt. The client script is run via CRON and reads the data from the server's script, running a notification command if it finds something "interesting". This is obviously not a brilliant solution, but would allow an admin to see site activity without being on the site, for example. You wouldn't want transmit anything non-public though.

Another alternative, to pick one of Chris's examples, would be Jabber. Jabber's really easy to bolt on to a script (as a simple client, at least). For example, the Identi.ca feed on the Sheffield Free Software Society homepage allows staff to post status updates which works by sending them to Identi.ca via Jabber (a text box submits its contents to a minimodule which loads a PHP Jabber library I found via Google). A similar hack could forward messages on to your Jabber account, either one you use personally or one that's monitored by a script on your computer that displays notifications. I've written a similar Jabber-account-listening script as a tiny blogging server a few years ago (before "microblog" was an actual term :P).

Well-settled

What would be a reason not to write an addon that creates an invisible box on screen which runs a script that polls the database every whatnot seconds and "sees" if a new PM (or whatever) is available and then would go visible?

Sure, load on server would increase but it could be something toggable by the user though.
