Would it be easy to make an addon that inserts an IRC into ocportal? Maybe even allowing you to have your own bot that also uses your host for the site to exist in the IRC chatroom?

What do you guys think?

That could be handy for a number of things. I would vote for it even though I am not big on chatting outside of forum software but I run a clan site and B3 (a program used to run commands in server and other things) can use an IRC pluggin to allow a bot to issue command and monitor server chat for swearing and updating stats etc. This could be extended to website events in game and things like that. You should add it as a feature request to the tracker.

To the tracker? Would be really cool if it posted on the chatroom 4 blog posts, and four of the latest forum topics every 30 minutes, and in my wildest most exagerated dreams, maybe have its own topic that just posts in either every 10 minutes deleting the older posts so people on the forum would see whats up in the IRC and also how many people are on.

It's a really fun idea. I doubt anyone would be able to find a way to fund it commercially (IRC Has Lost 60% Of Its Users Since 2003, But Life As A Robot Is Just Beginning | TechCrunch) but it could be good fun for a programmer with some spare time.

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.
