Expanded post templates

It would be very nice to have expanded post templates beyond the current post template system.
For example if I have a forum about breaking world news and I wanted some custom fields. One new field for a summary of the news and one new field for a link to the news source.

this would be very cool

I believe this ability exists in version 8 where you can create custom fields and apply them to various content types. In the Forums system, I see that custom fields are allowed for forum posts, forum topics and forums.

Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable than me can comment on this new capability.

Only issue coming to mind is they are per-content-type not per-category, so you couldn't have different fields on different forums.

  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Sure :).

For new functionality to be developed either we need:
  • someone to volunteer their time (happens quite rarely, but it's an option for anyone willing to do it)
  • or, ocProducts (my company) will implement new functionality on an hourly rate

Sponsorship refers to the latter. Essentially we work out how many hours we think it will take, then if anyone people want to fund that at the hourly rate (currently 33 GBP per hour) we'll do it :).

Version 8 has mostly been developed through a combination of off-shoots from commercial projects we've done for our clients, and from things specifically sponsored by users (actually custom fields for content types was one of those).

sounds good.

How much time do you estimate for adding content type category functionality to custom fields?

I've thought this out now, and documented how we'd do it, and the time it would take us (i.e. cost), on this issue:

This is a very reasonable quote for the added flexibility. It would be near the top of my list if we could just get the co-sponsorship the for multi-catgorization fetaure: 0000063: Multi-categorisation - ocPortal feature tracker

View topic: Sponsorship for Feature Tracker item #63: Multi-categorization - ocPortal
